A winter landscape depicting the snowy banks of the river Derwent with the welcoming lights of a cosy cottage in the distance.

“It is unusual for me to create a painting which is primarily a landscape” said of this painting “ But for a while I have been considering painting a winter landscape which would capture a similar atmosphere to my earlier piece of work ‘Tranquillity’ which depicted a heron flying above the Derwent in summer.” Tranquility was published as a limited edition print, which at the time became Pollyanna’s quickest selling limited edition ever released. The original painting was awarded a gold medal by The Wildlife Art Society International.

As with many of Pollyanna’s subjects, the Heron in the painting was a patient cared for by Pollyanna in the years she ran her wildlife sanctuary. Harry the heron arrived in the care of a local fisherman who had seen him floundering at the edge of the river. On examination, Pollyanna realised that Harry has been shot at, and although the shot had not wounded him, all the flight feathers had been sheared from his left wing, leaving him unable to fly. All she could do was provide him with food and shelter until his natural moult, when the feathers would grow back of their own accord. She adapted an aviary for Harry, sinking a tin bath full of water into the floor and hoping his stay will be a relatively short one, as her sanctuary did not have ideal lodgings for a large water bird. In the event it took Harry six months to grow new flight feathers, and during this time he cost us a small fortune. He devoured six whole fresh sardines a day, which he preferred to 'fish' for from a washing-up bowl full of clean water. After his extended stay with us, Pollyanna finally re-released a fully feathered Harry back onto the river Derwent. And how did Harry show his gratitude for our hospitality, and huge bill at the local fishmongers? By visiting our garden pond every day for a week until he had emptied it of goldfish.
